What is the RFID? -Smith-
The fundamental notion of RFID-Radio Frequency Identification- is to identify human and things, and to apply it to various fields. It is a little similar to a Bar Code but RFID is more advanced form. First, as Bar code uses a light as the mean of cognition, the range is too short. It can be perceived within 2 to 10cm far from its reader. But RFID can be perceived even without several meters far from its reader depending on what frequency it is used. Next, RFID can store much more date than bar code because it can include memory chips.
The example that we can see easily is a transportation card. As regarding just putting the card to the reader, they are alike. But the principle of each of them is exactly different. Bar code just reads the information already saved through the light reflecting from the chip. But RFID uses the frequency and communicates with the reader. It not only perceives frequency but also recognizes the circumstance around there. So it can exchange the information from each other at the same time.
The field of being applied with this technology lively is distribution. If we use RFID, we can know the information of each product, and manage all process from production to inventory control, and even decrease the rate of loss. In case of a city in Korea, they planted 700 trees with RFID chips. The tags contain the ID , what kind of and when the trees are planted. So, if we input the number of trees into a computer, we can know all information of the tree as well as its circumstance. Therefore, we now can probably work automatically instead of handworks.
In order to aim to be materialized Ubiquitous, the most important thing is to miniaturize the chip. So now RFID technology has still been developed.
But there are two demerits. First thing is the price of the chip. A RFID chip now costs at least 50 cents and even the reader is pretty expensive. Although the price became cheaper than before, it is still not affordable for small store to use. So, several companies in the U.S. and Europe have still been trying to drop the price up to 1 to 2 cents. Second thing is about personal information. Suppose that someone buys some products containing the RFID tag, anyone who has a RFID reader can know the size, the brand of those products and even when he bought it. So in order to deal with this trouble, a lot of companies have still been researching technology to discontinue the function of RFID chip as the customer buy the product. For these reasons, some groups of customers are against this technology. But we expect that RFID will be generalized as any form in few years because we can profit greatly from using RFID.
