Beef import

Nowadays the most important issue in Korea is the beef import. The details of the issue are like this. In order to aid the ratification of pending Korea-U.S free trade agreement, the President agreed in April to resume import of U.S beef to Korea. But it was unlike the previous imports, banned the cow meat over 30 months old.
There was a big public backlash after details of the agreement were released, and a lot of citizens express concerns over the safety of U.S beef. American cows are much cheaper than Korean cows. So, people can enjoy eating beef without much financial burden. But I know that the mad cow disease is very dangerous. In the U.S. they feed the cow with other animal’s meat when then raise them. But Cows are grass-eating animals. If people feed their cow with animal food, they cannot help but end up to get mad cow disease. This type of disease can also appear on human. That is why people are avoiding the cow which has mad cow disease. Furthermore, Koreans enjoy a kind of soup which has made of boiled beef bones.
For these reasons, I understand why the people participate in the candlelight vigils. But what I want to mention is that there was a hidden agenda. We cannot say the problem of beef import without the candlelight vigils. Of course people have a right to reject what they do not want and the things which could damage us. But so many people participate in the candlelight vigils. I do not think that they went there by themselves. Only few people have their own idea and went there. I believe that most of them just followed other people. They just wanted to go there. Some people think that it is a festival. They just wanted to be “in” because other people went there. I think most people are in this case. Most citizens might have been brainwashed by politicians who belong to the party which is against the President. Although the demonstrators say that there was no leader of the candlelight vigils and they came there themselves, It cannot be held without the leader despite of a huge gathering. There must be a hidden-agenda.
The ground of the reasons why I think so could be found on changing the subject. At first, the demonstrators insisted that we must not import any American beef especially it from cattle is over 30 months old. But as time goes by, what the demands of the demonstrators were getting be changed. At last, their demands were up to impeaching the President. It should never happen.
Although it seems that most Koreans agree with the candlelight vigils due to many people participate in the gathering, it is not true. There are also many people who agree with importing American beef. It is because instead of importing American beef, we can get more things such as obtaining American visa freely. Also, now, a lot of people are changing their mind to object the candlelight vigils because of the way that they insist.
The President was elected through an election. We elected him to be president. Since the President was elected only few months ago, I think that we have the duty to watch and follow him. Of course there was a problem of the President. The President did not accept the opinion of the people and listen to the people. It was his fault. But we have to treat our President with respect.
I am not insisting that he is right. I am insisting that we must not import any old cow which is over 30 months old as there is a big possibility of mad cow disease and must change the agreement so that we could be satisfied. Also, my point is that we have to insist as a right way when I want to insist.
